Midwest Camping Guides

We’re John and Suzie Dent, and we run Camping Life USA from Excelsior Springs, Missouri. Most of our weekends start the same way: a state park reservation, a truck that has to close, and a forecast we don’t fully trust. These guides collect what we’ve learned and looked up for those trips, from the Watkins Mill loop to Missouri rivers and lakes and state parks over the line in Iowa and Kansas. Pick the section that matches your next trip, whether that’s a state park weekend, a day of fishing, the camper on a 30-amp pad, or a cold fall night. Every guide links to the gear we’d actually pack.

Midwest camping guide FAQ

Where should I start planning a Missouri state park weekend?

Start with Camping in Missouri State Parks to see how sites and reservations work, then pack from our Missouri State Park Weekend Kit. If you are on an electric site, read 30-Amp RV Site Setup before you go.

Do I need a boat to fish on a Missouri camping trip?

No. If the park has a lake, one spinning combo and a small tackle box cover bass and panfish from the bank. Fish a Missouri State Park Without a Trailer shows how to fish a park weekend without towing a boat.

What kind of tent works best for Midwest state park camping?

For drive-up sites, pick floor space and an easy rainfly over light packed weight. A family cabin or instant tent is usually the right tool; a backpacking tent only makes sense if you carry the gear in. How to Choose a Family Camping Tent compares the options.

How do I stay warm on fall camping trips in the Midwest?

Lake loops get colder than the forecast after midnight. Pack a sleeping bag rated below the forecast low, put an insulated pad under it, and keep a dry warm layer for the evening. Fall Camping in the Midwest has the full plan.
