The short answer: For big smallmouth, float the James River or the Big Piney. For scenery and steady action, float the Current, Jacks Fork or upper Eleven Point. Closer to St. Louis, the Meramec and its Huzzah and Courtois creeks are good bets, and the Gasconade fishes well even in winter. Bring a 6 to 7 ft medium or medium light spinning combo, light line and soft plastic craws and tubes.
Missouri's clear, spring fed Ozark streams are made for floating and fishing. The fish facts below come from the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) Fishing Prospects reports, plus the National Park Service and U.S. Forest Service for the rivers they manage.
Before you go: permits and special rules
Most anglers need a Missouri fishing permit. Buy one or see who needs one on the MDC fishing permits page. Ozark streams have their own black bass season, and many of the streams below have stretches with special length and daily limits. Read the MDC black bass special area regulations and the general MDC fishing regulations before you keep a fish. We don't list limits here since they can change.
Current River (Ozark National Scenic Riverways, Shannon and Carter counties)
The Current is Missouri's classic float. MDC calls the 70 miles from Akers Ferry to Van Buren some of the most scenic, clear water and great smallmouth fishing in the Ozarks. Most fish run 8 to 12 inches, with about a quarter over 12 inches in MDC's last sample near Powder Mill. MDC says to work rocky banks and deep pools with rootwads or boulders. The river runs through Ozark National Scenic Riverways, the first national park area created to protect a river system. Read the MDC Current River prospects before you go.
Gear: A medium spinning combo like the Lew's American Hero 6 ft 6 in spinning combo with soft plastic craws or tubes from Zoom or Z-Man.
Jacks Fork River (Ozark National Scenic Riverways, Shannon County)
The Jacks Fork is the Current's smaller, wilder sister. MDC's Jacks Fork prospects report good smallmouth action for 2026, with plenty of fish over 8 inches but few over 18 inches. Fish rock ledges and boulders in the bluff pools. MDC notes that water is usually lower from Buck Hollow to Bay Creek in mid to late summer, with less traffic and fishing pressure. The stretch from Highway 17 to the Current River is a Smallmouth Bass Special Management Area.
Gear: A light outfit like the Lew's Wally Marshall Speed Shooter 6 ft ML combo is plenty here. Pair it with small tubes on Eagle Claw 1/8 oz tube jig heads.
Eleven Point River (Mark Twain National Forest, Oregon County)
The Eleven Point is a National Wild and Scenic River run by the U.S. Forest Service. MDC's Eleven Point prospects call the 17 miles from Thomasville to Greer Spring excellent for smallmouth and goggle-eye, with smallmouth of all sizes in the shoals, runs and pools. MDC suggests a green pumpkin plastic worm for the bigger smallmouth. The Forest Service notes that July through October is generally the low flow period at Thomasville, so float the upper river in spring.
Gear: A medium spinning combo, green pumpkin soft plastics from Zoom and a few crawdad crankbaits from Rapala.
Big Piney River (Texas and Pulaski counties)
In 2017 MDC expanded the Big Piney's Smallmouth Bass Special Management Area to cover the whole river from Slabtown Access to the Gasconade. MDC's Big Piney prospects expect good smallmouth fishing year round, with most fish in the 10 to 14 inch range and some much bigger. The water is very clear, especially when low, so MDC says to fish slowly from a canoe or small johnboat. If the boat isn't producing, get out and wade the swifter water. Rootwads and boulders near current hold the most fish, and don't skip the tail ends of the pools.
Gear: Light line from the fishing line aisle and natural colored tubes or grubs on a medium light spinning rod.
Gasconade River (Phelps and Pulaski counties)
The Gasconade's special management area runs from Highway Y in Pulaski County to Highway D in Phelps County. MDC's Gasconade prospects say anglers report good fishing year round there, especially in winter, and that 11 to 15 inch smallmouth are more common in this section than up or downstream. MDC also notes fewer adult smallmouth in its fall 2025 sample after years of flooding. Larger crayfish imitations and shallow running crankbaits may work best, and big fish hold in the deep water below riffles.
Gear: A medium spinning combo, crayfish soft plastics from Strike King and a box of small crankbaits.
Meramec River (east-central Missouri)
MDC's Meramec prospects expect fair to good smallmouth fishing in its Smallmouth Bass Special Management Area in 2026. Smallmouth are the most common black bass there, with lots of 8 to 12 inch fish and a fair number over 15 inches. Its fall 2025 sample showed lower numbers after recent floods.
Gear: The Lew's American Hero 6 ft 6 in spinning combo with small soft plastics and a few Rapala crankbaits.
Huzzah and Courtois Creeks (Crawford County area)
These two little Meramec tributaries are favorites for floating and wading. MDC's Courtois Creek prospects say smallmouth are the most abundant sport fish there, with better than one in three over 12 inches and about one in five over 15 inches in the last sample. MDC's Huzzah Creek prospects rate black bass fishing fair to good for 2026 and recommend flukes, tubes, grubs, worms and crayfish crankbaits around boulders and woody debris. You can float them or wade them, and both work.
Gear: A light spinning rod, small soft plastics from Z-Man and a few jig heads from Eagle Claw.
James River (southwest Missouri, Springfield to Galena)
MDC's James River prospects say smallmouth reign supreme from Lake Springfield to Galena and expect excellent fishing in 2026. Anglers regularly report smallmouth over 18 inches, especially in the special management area from the Hooten Town bridge to the Highway 413 and 265 bridge at Galena. Fish logs and boulder piles with live crayfish, finesse rigs or lures, and try topwater around sunrise and sunset.
Gear: A medium spinning combo for finesse rigs, plus hooks, sinkers and bobbers if you fish live crayfish.
Seasons and water levels
- Spring: higher water makes the upper rivers floatable, and smallmouth move toward gravel and current as the water warms.
- Summer: the busiest float season. Fish early and late, slow down in the deep bluff pools.
- Fall: cooler days, fewer people on the water and hungry fish.
- Winter: slow and deep. MDC says the Gasconade special management area fishes especially well in winter. Dress in layers and pack dry clothes.
Water levels can change fast after rain. Before every float, look up the nearest gauge on the USGS Missouri water conditions page, check the Ozark National Scenic Riverways alerts and conditions for the Current and Jacks Fork, and check the Forest Service Eleven Point page. If the water is high and muddy, stay off it.

Missouri smallmouth stream FAQ
What is the best Missouri float stream for smallmouth bass?
There is no single best one, but MDC expects excellent smallmouth fishing on the James River in 2026, and its prospects report good smallmouth action on the Jacks Fork and excellent fishing on the upper Eleven Point from Thomasville to Greer Spring. The Current, Big Piney, Gasconade, Meramec, Huzzah and Courtois are all strong choices too.
What is a Smallmouth Bass Special Management Area?
It is a stretch of stream where MDC sets special length and daily limits to grow bigger smallmouth. The Big Piney, Gasconade, Jacks Fork, Eleven Point, James and Elk rivers all have one. Check the MDC black bass special area regulations for the exact boundaries and limits before you keep a fish.
When is the black bass season on Missouri Ozark streams?
Ozark streams have their own black bass season, separate from lakes and non-Ozark streams. MDC posts the current dates and limits on its Ozark streams black bass season page, so check it before every trip.
What lures work best for Ozark smallmouth?
MDC prospects reports point to crayfish imitations, soft plastic tubes, grubs, flukes and worms, shallow running crankbaits and finesse rigs fished near boulders, rootwads and bluff pools. Topwater lures around sunrise and sunset can be a blast on the James.
What rod and reel should I bring on a float trip?
A 6 to 7 ft medium or medium light spinning combo with 6 to 8 lb line handles nearly every Ozark smallmouth situation. A two piece rod packs easier in a canoe or kayak.
How do I check water levels before a float?
Look up the nearest USGS stream gauge on the USGS Missouri water conditions page, and check the National Park Service alerts page for the Current and Jacks Fork. For the Eleven Point, check the Forest Service river page. Your outfitter can also help.
Do I need a fishing permit to fish Missouri streams?
Most anglers need a Missouri fishing permit, with some exceptions by age and residency. Buy one or check the rules on the MDC fishing permits page before your trip.
