Missouri State Park Weekend Kit
A Missouri state-park weekend is a drive-up trip. You need a tent that is up before dark, a sleep system that handles a cold lake loop, a stove that lights in wind, chairs that do not fold under you, and one fishing combo if there is water. This is the kit we pack from Excelsior Springs for Watkins Mill, Wallace, and the other icampmo.com loops.

Shelter
Drive-up parks reward floor space, not packed ounces. A family cabin or instant tent is the right tool. A backpacking tent is the wrong tool unless you are walking the gear in.

Stake it. Missouri clay after rain does not hold cheap pins. Measure packed size against the trunk or the fifth-wheel bay before you buy.
Sleep
Lake loops sit colder than the forecast after midnight. Pack a bag rated lower than the app low, plus a pad so the ground does not pull the heat out.

Kitchen
A two- or three-burner propane stove on a table beats a backpacking burner when you are feeding more than two. Cook out of the wind. Keep fuel and a lighter in the same tote as the stove.

Sit and eat
Two chairs and one table keep dinner off the picnic pad when it is wet. That is the whole furniture list for a two-night stay.

Light and power
You will cook and walk after dark. One lantern on the table and a headlamp in each pocket is enough. RV and 30-amp sites can charge phones; tent loops cannot. Plan the battery before you leave.

Bank fishing (optional)
If the park has a lake, one spinning combo and a small tackle box cover bass and panfish from the bank. You do not need a boat for a Saturday evening.

Power, packing order and rain
Check the amp rating on your reservation before you leave. Missouri state park electric sites are 30-amp or 50-amp; a 50-amp post usually has a 30-amp outlet too, but a 30-amp site is not a 50-amp site. Pack in this order: sleep gear and clothes against the back seat, then the kitchen tote and food, the tent and poles on top, and the cooler last in so it comes out first. Keep rainfly extras, a tarp and dry bags where you can reach them.
Stake and guy the rainfly as part of setup, even under blue sky, and hang a tarp over the table. Check the park’s alerts and a radar forecast before you leave and again when you arrive, and skip the lowest pad in the loop. More in Camping in the Rain.
What we leave at home
A second tent “just in case.” A giant stove you cannot lift onto the table. A backpacking kit for a paved loop. Extra chairs that never leave the truck.
