Missouri State Park Weekend Kit

A Missouri state-park weekend is a drive-up trip. You need a tent that is up before dark, a sleep system that handles a cold lake loop, a stove that lights in wind, chairs that do not fold under you, and one fishing combo if there is water. This is the kit we pack from Excelsior Springs for Watkins Mill, Wallace, and the other icampmo.com loops.

1. Shelter

Drive-up parks reward floor space, not packed ounces. A family cabin or instant tent is the right tool. A backpacking tent is the wrong tool unless you are walking the gear in.

Stake it. Missouri clay after rain does not hold cheap pins. Measure packed size against the trunk or the fifth-wheel bay before you buy.

2. Sleep

Lake loops sit colder than the forecast after midnight. Pack a bag rated lower than the app low, plus a pad so the ground does not pull the heat out.

3. Kitchen

A two- or three-burner propane stove on a table beats a backpacking burner when you are feeding more than two. Cook out of the wind. Keep fuel and a lighter in the same tote as the stove.

4. Sit and eat

Two chairs and one table keep dinner off the picnic pad when it is wet. That is the whole furniture list for a two-night stay.

5. Light and power

You will cook and walk after dark. One lantern on the table and a headlamp in each pocket is enough. RV and 30-amp sites can charge phones; tent loops cannot. Plan the battery before you leave.

6. Bank fishing (optional)

If the park has a lake, one spinning combo and a small tackle box cover bass and panfish from the bank. You do not need a boat for a Saturday evening.

John and Suzie Dent run Camping Life USA from Excelsior Springs. Watkins Mill is the close loop. Packed size has to fit the truck. Setup has to finish before dark. Rain between setup and dinner is normal. That is the filter for this kit.
