The Coleman Skydome 4-Person Tent with LED Lighting is a compact dome with built-in overhead lights that run on 3 AA batteries you supply. The poles come preattached, and Coleman says it sets up in about 5 minutes. The floor is 8 ft by 7 ft with 4 ft 8 in of center height, and Coleman says it fits one queen-size airbed, which is the honest load for two adults.

Who it suits

  • Two adults, or a parent and a couple of kids, on Missouri, Iowa, and Kansas state park weekends.
  • A kids’ tent or guest overflow next to the camper or a bigger family tent.
  • Campers who want light inside the tent without hanging a lantern from the ceiling.

Not the right tent for

Four adults with gear, since Coleman sizes the floor for one queen airbed. It is also not a backpacking tent at about 11.3 lb, and it has one door, so airflow comes mainly from the door and the mesh in the roof. If you need stand-up room for a family, see the Coleman Skylodge 8-Person Instant Tent.

Specifications (from Coleman)

  • Capacity: 4 person. Shape: dome. Doors: 1, a wide door for moving airbeds and bags in and out.
  • Floor: 8 ft by 7 ft. Center height: 4 ft 8 in. Nearly vertical walls; Coleman says about 20 percent more headroom than its traditional domes.
  • Setup: preattached poles. The front left corner of the tent and rainfly and the brow pole sleeve are color-coded red to line up the fly.
  • Lighting: overhead LED with an on and off switch, powered by 3 AA batteries (not included).
  • Weather: WeatherTec system with a tub-like floor, welded corners, inverted seams, and taped seams on the rainfly and tent body. Frame tested to 35 mph winds.
  • Bugs: Coleman Consumer Care says the mesh is fine enough to keep out no-see-ums.
  • Storage: gear pockets and a gear loft.
  • Weight: 11.29 lb. Packed size: about 24.2 by 8.9 by 4.9 in. Carry bag included.
  • Warranty: 1-year limited.

Before you buy

  • Pick up 3 AA batteries for the lights. They are not in the box.
  • Pitch it once in the yard. Coleman Consumer Care says one person can set it up but recommends extra hands.
  • Tuck a ground tarp under the floor edges, and stake and guy it out fully on open sites before a Midwest storm line rolls in.
  • Returns must be requested within 14 days of delivery, and the item must be unused, complete, and in its original packaging. Some items are final sale. See Shipping and Returns.
