The Coleman Sportster II is a one-burner liquid fuel stove for cooking in cold weather, when propane canisters struggle. Its Dual Fuel system burns Coleman liquid fuel or unleaded gasoline, so you can fill up at a gas station in a pinch. The burner puts out 10,500 BTU, is fully adjustable from a simmer to a hard boil, and Coleman says it boils a quart of water in about 4 minutes. A built in pot support and wind protection keep the flame working on a breezy ridge, and the 1.1 pint tank is filled with the included filter funnel. It is about 7.4 by 7.8 by 6.6 in, small enough to pack.

Who it suits

  • Late fall and winter campers, deer camp, and hunters in Missouri, Iowa, and Kansas who cook on frosty mornings.
  • Solo campers and pairs who need one hot pot at a time: coffee, oatmeal, a one-pan dinner.
  • Households that want a non-electric stove for outdoor use during a power outage.

Not the right stove for

Feeding a family on two pans at once, or campers who want simple screw-on propane. For group meals at a car campsite, look at the Portable 3-Burner Propane Camp Stove or the Coleman Even-Temp Propane Stove. Liquid fuel also asks more of you than propane: you fill the tank and follow the lighting steps in the Coleman manual every time.
